ABCD History
Retinopathy
of Prematurity (ROP) starts in tiny infants with immature but attached
retinas. large areas of avascular retina are sensitive to stresses in
the NICU such as fluctuating oxygen concentrations, and they produce neovascular
factors that can abnormally promote leaky, tangled blood vessels that
lead to retinal detachment and eventual bliindness. Fortunately, many
such infants can be treated if they are appropriately screened by NICU
staff.
