Sen. Bond Introduces Academy-Supported Children's Vision Legislation
Just prior to the August congressional recess, and following an intense 60-day negotiation, Sen. Kit Bond, R-Mo., introduced the "Vision Care for Kids Act of 2006" (S. 3685), which awards grants to states for ". . . providing comprehensive eye examinations…and treatment and services…for children who have been previously identified through a vision screening or eye examination." The Academy was joined by the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Optometric Association and the Vision Council of America in supporting the legislation, which closely resembles the Academy-backed H.R. 2328, introduced by Rep. Vito Fossella, R-NY. If enacted, S. 3685 would boost established vision screening programs in 31 states and complement the Academy's "Vision Screening: A Visionary Benefit for Children Campaign," which encourages and promotes routine vision screenings for children by physicians and trained screeners.
